Teaching Hindi varnamala at home: a simple order that works

Many parents feel unsure about teaching Hindi at home, especially if the child speaks more English. The good part is that the Hindi alphabet (varnamala) is very logical. If you follow a steady order, children pick it up quickly.

Step 1: Swar (vowels)

Begin with the swar: अ आ इ ई उ ऊ ए ऐ ओ औ अं अः. Say each one aloud and connect it to a picture – अ for अनार, आ for आम. Two or three new letters a week is plenty.

Step 2: Vyanjan (consonants) in groups

Teach the vyanjan in their natural rows: क ख ग घ, then च छ ज झ, and so on. Children find it easier to remember a row than single letters.

Step 3: Trace before writing

Dotted tracing sheets help the child learn the correct stroke order and the shirorekha (the line on top). Once tracing is neat, move to writing on their own.

Step 4: Two- and three-letter words without matra

Before matras, practise simple words like कमल, घर, जल, नल. Reading full words early gives children a real sense of achievement.

Step 5: Add matras one by one

Start with the ‘aa’ matra (ा) – राम, नाम, काम – then ि, ी and the rest. Finish one matra completely before starting the next.

Little and often is the secret. Ten minutes of Hindi each day will do more than one long session on Sunday.
